Prevail Watches Review: Tampa Roots, Giving Back, and My Picks

 · Maté D.

Prevail caught my attention because its field watches have a shape of their own. The broad, angular case and small, recessed dial feel more futuristic than nostalgic, even in the simplest black version. If you like practical watches but want something a little less familiar, I think there is a worthwhile idea here.

There is also a clear community connection: Prevail is a USA-based watch brand in Tampa, Florida, and says it donates $20 from every watch sold to the Heart and Armor Foundation. That contribution supports the foundation’s work in veterans’ health. I appreciate that the brand states a specific amount per watch in its charity policy.

My starting point would be the Onward Explorer in Standard Black; I would choose Tactical in Sunshine Orange for a more expressive version of the same concept. Both are listed at $275. This guide covers the complete current range: one Onward family, two dial styles, and seven color combinations, with one watch card for each style and images of every available color.

My recommendations here are based on Prevail’s published specifications and official photography. I have not tested these watches on the wrist. Images: Prevail Watches.

A USA-Based Brand With Tampa Roots

Prevail describes its origins in Tampa Bay, and its published company details list Onward Watch Company LLC in Tampa, Florida, United States. The brand story centers on contemporary military-style watches, resilience, and support for veterans.

What I like about the design direction is its restraint. There is no need for a complicated dial or a long list of functions: the case does most of the work. Broad steel surfaces frame a circular display, while a simple nylon strap keeps the overall look casual. It is a distinctive approach to an everyday field watch.

The American connection is the brand’s home and identity. The listed movement is the Ronda 513 quartz; I would not infer the watch’s manufacturing origin from the company’s Florida address.

How Watch Sales Support Veterans’ Health

Prevail’s stated commitment is straightforward: $20 from each watch sale goes to the Heart and Armor Foundation. It is a fixed contribution per watch, so a buyer can understand the pledge without working out a percentage of profits.

The Heart and Armor Foundation supports scientific research and community programs focused on veterans’ health, and seeks to strengthen the connection between civilians and people who have served. Its work includes veteran sleep research.

For me, the donation is a meaningful part of the buying decision, alongside the design, fit, and price. I still want the watch itself to make sense for the person buying it. Here, the combination is an accessible quartz field watch with a specific charitable commitment attached to each sale.

The Complete Prevail Range At A Glance

The current catalog is refreshingly easy to navigate. Onward Future Field Watch is the family name; Explorer and Tactical are its two interpretations. Both use the same movement, width, lug-to-lug length, and water-resistance rating, with different dial and bezel treatments.

What Do You Get For $275?

The shared specification is appealing for an everyday watch: matte stainless steel, a recessed sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown, and a 200m water-resistance rating. The battery-powered Ronda 513 keeps the proposition simple. I would consider quartz a practical choice here, especially if this is a watch you plan to rotate with others.

The construction detail I would pay closest attention to is the fixed lugs. The supplied 20mm nylon strap passes beneath the case and through the lug openings. That suits the field-watch character, but replacement straps need to work with this arrangement; an ordinary two-piece strap or bracelet is not a straightforward swap.

There are a couple of other limits worth understanding. The bezel is fixed, so it does not provide the elapsed-time function of a rotating dive bezel. And while the specifications look promising, they do not tell me how well the watch is finished in person, how its lume lasts overnight, or how it feels after a full day of wear. Those are questions for a hands-on review.

Onward Explorer: My Starting Point

The Explorer in Standard Black would be my first choice for daily wear. Large 12, 3, 6, and 9 numerals give the dial an immediately familiar layout, while the surrounding case keeps it from looking like a conventional round field watch. I also like how the simpler bezel leaves more attention on the dial.

Black is the most versatile option to my eye. Expedition Tan brings warmer, muted tones and a matching earthy strap, while Sunshine Orange makes the face much more prominent against the steel case. All three share the same listed specifications and price. Select a thumbnail below to compare the colors.

Onward Tactical: My Pick For A Bolder Look

Tactical trades Explorer’s large numerals for geometric markers and adds more pronounced facets around the bezel. I find it the more unusual-looking of the two, particularly in Sunshine Orange. The bright dial softens some of the military styling and gives the watch a playful side.

I would choose it for that appearance, since the core functions remain the same as Explorer. The product pages do list a slightly thicker case: 11.6mm, compared with Explorer’s 11mm. Both are 42mm across and 47.5mm long.

Standard Black and Expedition Tan are the quieter alternatives. Shadow Gray takes the design in a darker direction, with a PVD-coated steel case explicitly listed in its specification. It is the one additional color offered only in Tactical in the current catalog. The card below includes all four colors; use the thumbnails or arrows to switch between them.

What I Would Check Before Buying

Start with the 47.5mm lug-to-lug length. The 42mm width includes a fairly broad case around a smaller dial, so diameter alone may give the wrong impression. Prevail’s sizing page describes the Onward as wearing like a 39mm watch and points to its downturned lugs. That is the brand’s fit assessment; I would compare the measurements with a watch I already find comfortable before ordering.

Think about the strap. The single-pass nylon suits a casual watch, and its route underneath the case will also affect how the watch sits. If you prefer a bracelet or a conventional leather strap, the fixed-lug design deserves particular attention.

Read the warranty and return terms. Prevail offers a 24-month warranty for defects in movement materials or workmanship under normal use. Battery life and normal wear are excluded. Its standard return policy allows 14 calendar days from receipt to request a return, requires the watch to remain unworn with its packaging, and lists shipping, handling, and restocking charges. I would check those terms before treating a home try-on as cost-free.

Is Prevail Worth Considering?

I would put Prevail on the shortlist for someone who wants an affordable quartz field watch with a distinctive case, enjoys nylon straps, and likes the idea of buying from a Tampa-based brand that contributes to veterans’ health.

My recommendations are simple:

  • For everyday versatility: Onward Explorer in Standard Black. Its clear numerals and restrained color give me the strongest starting point.
  • For a warmer field-watch look: Explorer in Expedition Tan. I would choose it if black feels too plain and orange feels too bright.
  • For personality: Onward Tactical in Sunshine Orange. This is the version I find most visually engaging.
  • For a darker case: Tactical in Shadow Gray, with its PVD-coated finish.

The main reasons I would look elsewhere are a preference for mechanical movements, a smaller overall footprint, or more freedom to fit conventional straps and bracelets. At $275, though, the Onward has enough character and useful specifications to deserve a closer look. The clearly stated charitable contribution adds another reason to take an interest in the brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Prevail a USA-based watch brand?

Yes. Prevail is based in Tampa, Florida, and its company details identify Onward Watch Company LLC at a Tampa address. Its brand story describes its origins in Tampa Bay. That establishes the brand’s home, rather than a country-of-manufacture claim for the complete watch.

How much does Prevail donate from each watch sale?

Prevail says it donates $20 from every watch sold to the Heart and Armor Foundation, which supports scientific research and community programs focused on veterans’ health. The stated pledge is a fixed amount per watch.

What is the difference between Onward Explorer and Tactical?

Explorer uses large quarter-hour numerals and a simpler bezel; Tactical uses geometric hour markers and a more sculpted bezel. Both have a Ronda 513 quartz movement, 42mm width, 47.5mm lug-to-lug length, and 200m water-resistance rating. Explorer is listed at 11mm thick and Tactical at 11.6mm.

Are Prevail watches automatic or quartz?

All seven current Onward Explorer and Tactical versions use a battery-powered Ronda 513 quartz movement. No automatic or hand-wound model was listed in the official catalog when I checked on October 19, 2026.

Can I change the strap on a Prevail Onward?

The Onward has fixed lugs and comes on a 20mm single-piece nylon strap that passes beneath the case. I would choose a replacement compatible with fixed lugs; a conventional two-piece strap or bracelet is not a straightforward fit.

How long is the Prevail warranty?

Prevail states a 24-month warranty covering defects in movement materials or workmanship under normal use. Battery life, normal wear, and certain types of damage are excluded. I would keep the purchase documents and read the current warranty terms before buying.
