A simpler setting routine
Miyota’s instruction sheet shows a normal crown position for winding and a pulled-out position for time setting. There is no date-setting position. The seconds hand stops while you set the time. [source]

Less calendar. More simplicity.
The 9039 keeps the brief simple: hours, minutes, and central seconds, with no calendar to set. Its 3.90 mm movement height and 4 Hz beat rate make it an interesting option when you want a clean dial and a relatively slim automatic movement.

My take
I would put the 9039 on my shortlist for a time-only watch. Its appeal is practical: a simple setting routine and room for a relatively slim case. I would still check the watch’s actual thickness and its brand’s timekeeping promise instead of choosing by the caliber alone.
Beyond the spec sheet
Miyota’s instruction sheet shows a normal crown position for winding and a pulled-out position for time setting. There is no date-setting position. The seconds hand stops while you set the time. [source]
The instruction sheet describes clockwise hand winding and suggests 15–20 crown turns to start the movement. That is a starting instruction, not a claim that those turns provide the full 42-hour reserve. [source]
A 3.90 mm movement gives a designer room to work, but the dial, hands, crystal, caseback, and water-resistance construction also take up space. Compare finished watches when deciding what will sit comfortably on your wrist.

Quick answers
No. It is a three-hand movement without a calendar. That also means its normal setting routine has no unused date-setting position, sometimes called a “ghost date” position.
Yes to both. You can wind it through the crown and stop the seconds hand when setting the time. Follow the watch brand’s instructions for any screw-down crown.
Miyota lists approximately 42 hours, so you should not plan on a full weekend off the wrist. Your actual remaining reserve also depends on how fully wound the watch was when you took it off.
