STOWA Flieger Classic 40 white

Specs:

  • Movement: Automatic
  • Caliber: Sellita SW 200
  • Power Reserve: 38 hours
  • Case Width: 40 mm
  • Lug-to-Lug Distance: 48.6 mm
  • Price: Under $1,000

Stowa’s Flieger Classic 40 with the white dial is something that caught my attention. It is a classic pilot watch, with dimensions that will fit even smaller wrists as well, but the subtle use of blue around the hour and minute hands against the white dial makes it a touch more elegant than your usual pilot watches.

We have the classic elements on the dial we’d expect from a classic pilot watch. Large Arabic numerals, and a triangle with two dots at the 12 o’clock position, and a date window at the 6 o’clock position to maintain the symmetry. The Alpha hour and minute hands’ outline is blue, which gives the watch just enough of a pop of color to bring this design to the modern days.

Inside the 40 mm wide case, the Swiss-made automatic Sellita SW 200 caliber ensures the reliable timekeeping that provides 38 hours of power reserve.

Hamilton Khaki Field Murph – The Interstellar Watch

Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 42 mm

Specs:

  • Movement: Automatic
  • Caliber: H-10
  • Power Reserve: 80 hours
  • Case Width: 42 mm
  • Price: Under $1,000

Hamilton Khaki Field Murph 38 mm

Specs:

  • Movement: Automatic
  • Caliber: H-10
  • Power Reserve: 80 hours
  • Case Width: 38 mm
  • Price: Under $900

This Hamilton Khaki Field watch, featured in the movie “Interstellar” with a key role, quickly became a popular timepiece.

The watch’s design is classic and understated, with a simple black dial, luminous hands and markers, and a stainless steel case. Its utilitarian aesthetic reflects its military heritage, as the Khaki Field was originally designed for use by soldiers in the field.

However, in “Interstellar,” the watch transcends its utilitarian origins and becomes a symbol of hope and connection. When Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, leaves for his mission to the stars, he gives his daughter Murph his Hamilton watch. Years later, when Murph is working on a crucial equation to save humanity, she receives a message in Morse code from her father – transmitted through the second hand of the Hamilton watch. The message provides the missing piece of the equation, allowing Murph to complete her work and ensure humanity’s survival.

As a tribute to the film and the watch’s pivotal role, Hamilton included a subtle detail on the watch: the word “Eureka” is printed in Morse code on the seconds hand. This serves as a reminder of the watch’s significance and its connection to the movie’s themes of exploration, discovery, and the enduring power of love.

  • Caliber: YEMA2000
  • Power Reserve: 42 hours
  • Case Width: 40 mm

Developed in partnership with the French Air and Space Force, this timepiece features an ultra-light and durable titanium case and has Yema’s in-house YEMA 2000 automatic caliber. The titanium is also 40% lighter than steel and more resistant to shocks and corrosion. Measuring 40mm with a 46mm lug-to-lug distance and a thickness of less than 10mm, the case is relatively thin and comfortably fits all wrists.

Yema is an established and respected micro-brand, and it’s a great choice if you prefer to support brands that haven’t yet made their way into the mainstream, making it a pretty unique pick.

Farer Morgan

Specs:

  • Movement: Automatic
  • Caliber: Sellita SW200
  • Power Reserve: 38 hours
  • Case Width: 39.5 mm
  • Price: Around $900

The Morgan watch, a distinguished timepiece named after Sir Morien Bedford Morgan, the visionary behind Concorde—Britain’s pioneering supersonic passenger aircraft, stands as a testament to both heritage and innovation. A key feature of this watch is its Faraday soft-iron inner cage, a design element that neutralizes harmful magnetic fields around the movement during flight. While this feature may seem antiquated in the context of daily life, it proves surprisingly relevant in today’s technology-driven world, shielding the delicate movement from the constant magnetic interference emitted by ubiquitous devices like phones and laptops.

At the heart of the Morgan lies a superb Swiss automatic movement, renowned for its precision and reliability. This movement is housed within a 39.5 mm case, a size that strikes the perfect balance between presence and wearability, ensuring a comfortable fit on a wide range of wrist sizes. The watch’s aesthetic appeal is equally compelling, with a matte black dial providing a striking backdrop for the minimalistic, easy-to-read numerals. Complemented by a beautiful, sturdy leather strap, the Morgan watch effortlessly combines form and function, making it a standout timepiece that excels in both style and substance.

DEKLA Pilot watch 44 mm Type A

  • Movement: Automatic
  • Caliber: ETA 2824 / Sellita SW200-1
  • Power Reserve: 38 hours
  • Case Width: 44 mm

The Stuttgart-based German watch manufacturer Dekla was founded in 2016. Dekla prioritizes high-quality craftsmanship and a significant degree of in-house production, including the manufacturing of cases, dials, and hands.

The classic Flieger watches were meticulously crafted in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s, specifically for aviators.

The design prioritized legibility and functionality above all else. This emphasis resulted in several distinctive features: large, high-contrast dials with bold numerals and hands, often coated with luminous material for easy reading in low-light conditions; simple, uncluttered layouts to avoid distractions; and robust construction to withstand the rigors of flight.

The Dekla Pilot Type A watch follows a classic Flieger design, but what sets it apart is the customization process. Each watch and its components are individually crafted based on your selections when designing the watch on the Dekla website. Keep in mind, this personalized approach naturally results in a longer lead time and potential production delays.
